Weekapaug Inn Rhode Island Autumn travel 2026

WEEKAPAUG INN

Located on the Rhode Island shoreline overlooking Quonochontaug Pond and the Atlantic Ocean - Weekapaug Inn (a sister property of the iconic Ocean House on Watch Hill) offers quintessentially New England accommodations that mix casual comfort with luxurious furnishings. In 1899 - Frederick Buffum, a Rhode Island-born entrepreneur and his wife, Phebe opened a small inn that became damaged in the hurricane of 1938. The family’s farsighted wisdom to protect the barrier beach, which included convincing other landholders who had lost homes to rebuild back from the dunes, has resulted in a privately owned, secluded enclave in an unparalleled setting that has changed only minimally. In 2012, the historic inn underwent a $20 million renovation to preserve its storied past and update modern conveniences and was invited into Relais & Châteaux - a world standard for excellence in hospitality.

The Beach

Fall-Winter beach in Rhode Island is a wonderful and unappreciated resource. Winter sand is firm underfoot and makes for great walking. On clear days, sunshine reflects off the ocean and adds unexpected warmth. Set off down the beach at a smart pace and soon you will be shedding layers and feeling exhilarated. The lower half of the beach is always free of snow and ice, even the morning after a snowfall – and oftentimes guests ski along the upper beach, while companions walk in sneakers along the hard dry sand closer to the tideline taking in the crisp, fresh salt air and the scents of ocean tides.
